Sparks Fly: China's Fudan University Launches AI Archaeology Course

In September 2024, Fudan University initiated its first batch of "AI Master Classes," including an "AI Archaeology" course. Eleven students, six from humanities backgrounds and five from science and engineering, enrolled, with six auditing. Coursework covered AI archaeology history, frontiers, principles, image processing, and databases. Students' final projects included AI-based oracle bone script deciphering, mold identification on paper artifacts, and bronze ware dating. One student developed a demo that accurately identified 76% of bronze tripods based on deep learning. Challenges included bridging the knowledge gap between science and humanities students. Fudan aims for AI courses to reach 100% of undergraduates and graduates by Spring 2025. (Photo/Visual China)
